Natural Dye Cotton Placemats

$ 16.00

These naturally dyed placemats are the result of  the increasing demand for sustainable and natural goods. All the mordants and dyes used are 100% natural derived from mineral and plant sources. The Coral Placemats are dyed using alizarin. Alizarin is a natural dye made from the root of the madder plant and has been one of the most prominent and widely used natural dyes in history. Dried and powdered roots of the madder plant are used for dyeing shades of Red. This is the famous “Indian red” also the color worn by monks, priests and mendicants of the Buddhist and Hindu religions.

The primary dye used in the Blue Placemats is Indigo. Indigo is obtained from the crushed leaves of the Indigo plant, Indigifina tinctoria. It is known to be one of the oldest dyes to be used for textile dyeing and printing and was highly sought after by ancient traders and has been used and traded in and from India for thousands of years.

The primary dye used in the Sand Placemat is made from Pomegranate Rind and turmeric. It gives a lovely Mango-yellow shade to the fabric.

Due to the hand dyed nature of this process there are bound to be variations and imperfections in color and sometimes dye intensity. This is inherent in the natural world and should not be considered a defect.  Choose placemat by color: Coral, Blue or Sand. Each placemat sold individually.  Napkins shown are not available.
